Earlier this year I submitted a request to my congresswoman’s office* for a flag to be flown over the Capitol in D.C. in honor of all who have been impacted by the Vietnam War.
I chose April 1 because it was beginning of the last month that America was in Vietnam and the first day of what the South Vietnamese dubbed “Black April.”
Soon I will receive that Stars and Stripes in the mail and keep it as a tribute to the heavy toll exacted by that war, that era, that extended period of time which is still unfathomable and still echoes on today.
Through my studies and my writing I have seen how reaching out, making connections, looking closely, and listening can facilitate the coming to terms with the many truths we’ve hidden or run from. I hope that this healing may continue.
*Anyone can submit a request for a flag to be flow for a specified reason.
